Dear Members and Friends of Vernon Presbyterian Church,

This is the time of year when the Nominating Committee does its work of discerning whom God is calling to leadership in the church and inviting into leadership roles those whom they believe God has called. It’s a good time to reflect on some Biblical principles of leadership:

  • We believe God calls people to leadership, and gives people the gifts they need to lead (1 Corinthians 12:27-31).
  • We believe God has so arranged every church, no matter what its size, so that the necessary gifts are present to meet the needs of the people.
  • Biblical leaders lead by serving others, building others up, encouraging them, and helping them to find ways to use their gifts for God’s service. Biblical leadership is not about dominating or controlling others. (Ephesians 4: 11-13).
  • God often calls to leadership people who do not look (or feel) especially qualified. Jeremiah, Gideon, and Moses all complained when God called them that they weren’t qualified. God made the same promise to them that God makes to you and me: I will be with you. God does not call the qualified, God qualifies the called.
  • We are called to respect our leaders and their decisions—to encourage them and build them up. When we disagree with leadership decisions, we do so by speaking directly with the person or persons involved, and doing so courteously and respectfully (Matthew 18:15-17; Ephesians 4:32).

The Presbyterian system of government is based on strong lay leadership. Indeed, the word “Presbyterian” comes from the Greek presbuteros, which means Elder. Our system is a government by elders. The system is only as good as the willingness of the people to accept the responsibilities of leadership, and to work within the system, using the gifts God has given them for the good of all.

Discernment of whom God is calling to leadership is really a year-round process that involves everyone in the congregation. Everyone should be thoughtful and prayerful about suggesting names for consideration. And if you are asked to serve, please be thoughtful and prayerful about your response.

                                                                         Grace and peace,  Pastor Judy
